Urgent Eye Care (CUES)
NHS Community Urgent Eyecare Scheme
The Community Urgent Eyecare Scheme (CUES) was set up in 2020 to provide acute eyecare services at a time when the hospitals were overloaded with emergency eyecare. It was such a success that the NHS in conjunction with Primary Eyecare Services has continued to provide this service since that time.

The majority of patients whose GP is located in the regions close to the EyeCare Specialists Optometrist Practices can be seen through this NHS funded CUES scheme.

With this tool you can search the PES directory to find out whether the service is available in your area by entering the postcode for your GP Practice.
Please note that this service is not and does not replace a normal eye test or contact lens check. Also if you have a major eye condition that is being regularly monitored by your optometrist or hospital eye service, such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma, this is not covered by this service. In this case you should consult your usual optometrist or hospital eye service directly for advice in the usual way.
Conditions covered include things like

Recent onset flashing lights or floaters in the vision, or an acute worsening of these symptoms in the last few days

Sudden reduction/loss in vision in one or both eyes

Acute Red Eye

Acute Eye pain/ sore eye

Corneal Foreign body
-
Pus/discharge from eye

Minor eye injuries
Eyecare Specialists are independent prescriber optometrists. This means that not only can patients be triaged and diagnosed but also prescribed, when appropriate, prescription only medicines (POM) to facilitate their treatment and recovery. As patients are often able to be seen within 36 hours, often on the same day, treatment can be implemented sooner at an earlier stage often with a speedier recovery as a result. Treatment can be often NHS funded for eligible patients.
This scheme is in place so that patients can be seen, diagnosed and usually treated much more quickly than the traditional route to Hospital casualty. Chronic eye issues are not covered.
Patients with acute eye problems are encouraged to phone us directly so that they can be seen as quickly as possible at our Four Marks and Alton practices. We also take referrals from GPs, pharmacists, 111, PEC services.

An appointment will normally be required – whether virtually (telephone or video) or face to face, so please telephone first. Appointments are available during normal working hours.
Please do not visit the practice without first booking an appointment. You will be asked some questions about your symptoms to assess your needs. More urgent cases will be seen within 24 hours.
If you have very minor symptoms the optometrist may advise you how to manage the condition yourself or how to seek support from your local pharmacy.
