Amsler Grid
The Amsler grid is a valuable tool for monitoring your central visual field, helping to detect early and often subtle changes in vision caused by various macular conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and diabetic macular oedema. It is also useful for tracking any vision changes once they have been identified. When using the Amsler grid, each eye is tested individually, allowing you to identify any vision issues that may be affecting just one eye.
Examples of distorted Amsler grids
How to use the Amsler grid
-
Test your vision in well-lit conditions.
-
Wear your reading glasses or use the reading portion of your bifocals, if you typically read with spectacles.
-
If you wear Progressive or Varifocal lenses, you may notice some distortion. This could be due to the lens design rather than an issue with your eyes. If you're concerned, consult an eye care professional.
-
-
Hold the Amsler grid at your usual reading distance (about 35 cm).
-
Cover one eye with the palm of your hand.
-
Focus on the central dot of the grid at all times.
-
Do not let your eye move away from the center dot.
How to Identify a Problem
As you test each eye separately, ask yourself the following questions:
-
Are any of the lines crooked or bent?
-
Are any of the boxes a different size or shape compared to the others?
-
Do any lines appear wavy, missing, blurry, or discolored?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions and have not noticed the issue before, contact your optometrist immediately for an examination.
Remember: With Progressive or Varifocal lenses, some distortion may occur due to the lens design. If this causes concern, reach out to an eye care professional for advice.
